He wants a playful naturalization
By Sarah Rempe · Friday 29 May 2026 · TECHNOLOGY | LEARNING
Vincenzo Casini built a mobile app to train for the Swiss naturalization test — and also to learn more about his country and his region.
There are mobile apps for the car licence, the boat licence and even for getting the Swiss passport. Vincenzo Casini, however, wanted to give this kind of technology a different spin. "My wife and I are going through a naturalization process, and it was very hard to motivate ourselves to revise all the questions," explains this Italian who has lived in Morges since 2014.
A developer by training, he then set out to design a new app he wanted to be simple, effective and playful. "The first version was a plain web page and it took me less than an hour." Using the naturalization questions available on the Canton of Vaud website, he built a questionnaire valid for Morges residents. "The cantonal site is very well made, you find plenty of data and the official exam questions there," explains Vincenzo Casini.
Originally intended for personal use only, the 43-year-old from Morges was then approached by his parents. "They are going through naturalization too, but in Gland. So they asked me if I could do the same with the questions specific to their commune."
From then on, why not go further and offer this test for each Vaud commune — and even for other cantons?
Carried away by his passion
The official test consists of 48 random questions, on which you have to score at least 70% correct in one hour. Candidates are examined on four themes: history, geography, political institutions and society. "In total, there are 160 general questions about Switzerland and the canton and 32 additional ones specific to the commune. Multiplied by the 300 existing communes, that comes to a little over 9,700 questions," the developer explains.
However, not all the questions are available on the web. Vincenzo Casini's app therefore currently lets you take the exam for the cantons of Vaud, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Bern, Zurich, Aargau, Lucerne and Valais.
"The idea is also to be able to track your progress and see in which topic you are weaker," says the man who does this alongside his job as a technical lead specialized in artificial intelligence at UEFA. "You can, for example, enter your exam date and the app will tell you how to train to be ready on D-day."
For everyone
But Vincenzo Casini's ideas don't stop there. "The app is aimed at those who want to take the naturalization test, but not only. I wanted to develop a playful aspect so people can test their knowledge about their country and their region." Recognizing the country's cantonal coats of arms, matching the right capital to the right canton or answering various quizzes are among the options offered by the Swiss Naturalization Test app. And all of it entirely free. "There are other apps that are paid, but making money with it is not my goal," Vincenzo Casini assures. "It's my passion, I enjoy building it, so my goal is for as many people as possible to try it and have fun with it."
In the meantime, the Italian uses it himself, as he awaits an exam date to obtain his white-cross passport. "It would be the ultimate irony if the app's creator failed," jokes the man who admits he "still struggles a bit with the political questions." "But I'm learning a huge amount, and I'm sure that even those who are Swiss can also gain new knowledge."
"I wanted to develop a playful aspect so people can test their knowledge about their region, even without taking the test."

Conquer the canton!
Among his development ideas, Vincenzo Casini would like to build a conquest game. "I'd find it fun that, starting from one commune, you have to win the neighbouring villages by answering questions about their history each time. Little by little, the goal would be to win all the communes of the canton." A chance to learn more about your region while having fun. Something that could interest the thousands of yearly naturalization candidates (5,412 new Vaud citizens in 2025), but also those who love their region and want to learn more about its history, geography or political principles.
