To the Swiss passport with your smartphone: this app tests your naturalization knowledge

By Matthias Niederberger · 24 July 2026, 05:00

An app developed in French-speaking Switzerland prepares the naturalization questions so you can practise them in everyday life. It works in eleven cantons – including Aargau.

Here's the point

  • An app called "Swiss Naturalization Test" prepares the naturalization questions for practice.
  • In Aargau it is based on the official question catalogue of nearly 330 questions on democracy, the welfare state and history.
  • The app is free, works offline and can be used in eleven cantons.

Anyone who wants to be naturalized has to answer questions. Not only about their personal situation, but also about Switzerland, the canton and the commune. This is known as the civic test. In Aargau, an online version with a selection of practice questions already exists.

Until now, that had been a rather dry affair. An app from French-speaking Switzerland wants to change that.

It was developed by Vincenzo Casini, 43 years old, Italian, in Switzerland since 2014 and an "AI Architect" at UEFA. He programmed the app during his own naturalization process. Several thousand people in Switzerland already use it today.

Gamifying naturalization

The "Swiss Naturalization Test" app works for eleven Swiss cantons. One of them is Aargau. It is based on the canton's official question catalogue. This comprises nearly 330 questions on topics such as democracy, the welfare state or history.

You won't find alternative questions or practice material in the app. What's new is the user-friendly presentation of Aargau's official question catalogue.

The application offers smart coaching, an online leaderboard and a Play, Challenge and Conquest mode. In other words: part of the naturalization process is gamified.

A personal try-out shows: it really is more fun than ploughing through 330 questions in a row. In RapidFire you can answer true/false questions about every Swiss canton. How many correct answers can you manage in 60 seconds? With "The canton of Aargau joined the Confederation in 1332", many non-Aargau residents will probably just take a guess.

Swiss citizens should use the app too

Everything is free and can also be used offline. On top of that, you can become part of the community and exchange ideas on social media, because "together you learn better."

The canton of Aargau seems to see a lot of good in the app. According to developer Vincenzo Casini, the Integration Office recently had its own official material integrated into the app. "To my knowledge, Aargau is thus one of the first cantons whose integration office actively contributes to such a free preparation tool," he says.

The app is not only meant for those currently going through the naturalization process, he says. He also wants to reach Swiss citizens. "Preparing for naturalization doesn't end on the day of the exam: you can keep getting to know Switzerland and enjoy it."

Would you pass the test?

Anyone who wants to test for themselves whether they would pass can download the app on iOS or Google Play. Alternatively, you can try this newspaper's own naturalization test, which is also based on the official question catalogue.
