Becoming Swiss? You can revise for it on your phone too

An Italian developer living in the canton of Vaud has built an app to prepare for his own Swiss naturalization test. The tool is catching on in Geneva too, where it already has more than 700 users.
Getting the passport with the white cross is a journey that takes preparation. Among the steps: the knowledge test about Switzerland and how it works.
When Vincenzo Casini and his wife started revising for their own naturalization, they looked for a suitable app. Without success.
"They are either paid, or haven't been updated in a long time, or the interface isn't great," says the developer. So he decided to build a tool himself, based on the questions provided by his commune. "The idea really came from a concrete need of ours. And then we thought there were surely other people with the same need," Vincenzo adds.
That is how Swiss Naturalization Test was born, an app now available on iOS and Android. It lets candidates practise the questions they might face in their exam.
In Geneva, more than 700 people already use it. Some questions prove trickier than others, particularly those about Swiss politics.
"For example, when asked how often federal elections take place, 60% answer correctly and 40% don't know," Vincenzo notes.
For Geneva candidates the stakes are high: the questionnaire has 45 questions and only five mistakes are allowed.
Vincenzo doesn't just help others revise. With his wife, he has to sit the exam himself in a few days.
"On Monday we take our written test... but it should be fine," he smiles.
One question that certainly isn't in the official questionnaire: how do you make a good Swiss raclette? On that point, Vincenzo already seems ready.
"Good Swiss cheese, local. Good potatoes. And above all good company, friends ready to eat and to drink some good wine."
The raclette is sorted. The rest will play out in a few days.
